H2Know, measures and transmits hourly water usage data—older systems could only provide a single monthly usage total. Why is hourly usage important and how can it help you and our city? With our new system, you will have the power to:

• Receive automatic alerts of higher than normal usage spikes within a day of their occurrence
• Receive automatic alerts of long term continuous usage (indicating possible leaks)
• Establish a monthly “water budget” and be alerted when you reach or exceed your target
• Monitor usage patterns such as irrigation to better manage the frequency and duration of watering
• Save water and save money

This system will also help the city find and repair its own leaks, better manage its Water Conservation Programs and provide more useful information when you contact us with questions.

Seniors age 60 and older who own and occupy their home and meet certain income and other guidelines may qualify for repairs and deteriorated conditions on their home. The program focuses on HUD approved rehabilitation standards and health/safety concerns.

• For seniors age 60 and older or disabled (any age)
• Must own and occupy the home
• Must meet certain income and other guidelines
• Repairs must meet HUD approved rehabilitation and safety standards
• Remodeling and cosmetic updates are not allowed

The program provides deferred payment, 0% and 3% loans up to $75,000 for low and moderate income homeowners 60 years and older or disabled citizens to rehab single family homes and is used in conjunction with the CDBG Rehabilitation Program.  Applications are accepted on a first-come first-served basis and rehabs and/or reconstructions are conducted based on need. Grand Prairie implemented a homestead exemption of $45,000 for residents 65 and older who own and live in their residence. The city froze taxes for those seniors who file for the Senior Exemption. This means the year you turn 65 and file for the Senior Exemption, your property tax amount will never go higher. If you continue to live in that house for 20-30 years, and value doubles, you will pay the amount you paid that first year.

The Medication Disposal Program in Grand Prairie gives residents a place to safely dispose of pharmaceuticals on an ongoing basis. Residents can bring prescription medications including narcotics (Oxycodone, Vicodin, etc.), medication samples, pet medications, medicated ointments/lotions, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, inhalers and unopened EpiPens to the Grand Prairie Police Department for disposal. The ASPCA offers free Pet Safety Packs. Safety pack includes a pet rescue window decal to help alert rescue personnel that pets are inside your home in the event of an emergency. You’ll also find an ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (APCC) magnet, so you can keep APCC’s information handy should you need 24 hour emergency animal poison information about your pet.

The Grand Prairie Police Department’s Senior Safety Key Lockbox Program is designed to expedite access into homes during a 911 emergency. The key lockbox securely provides a door key so emergency first responders can enter, reducing the need of using forced entry into a home when the resident is not able to answer the door due to a medical or other emergency.

AARP Foundation Tax-Aide offers free tax preparation assistance Feb. 1 through April 15. Now in its 51st year, Tax-Aide has helped more than 68 million low- and moderate-income taxpayers. Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE). A federal grant program provides tax preparation assistance to those 60 and older from IRS-certified volunteers. (Most TCE sites are operated by AARP Foundation Tax-Aide.) For more information, call 888-227-7669 toll-free or check online.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA). Under another federal grant program, IRS-certified VITA volunteers provide tax-preparation services to older Americans, low- and moderate-income filers, people with disabilities and those with limited English language skills. Generally, taxpayers must have an annual income below $55,000 to qualify. Call 800-906-9887 to find a nearby VITA site. Online assistance is also available.
