Protect Migratory Birds this Season

Published on August 20, 2026

Fall bird migration is underway in Texas! According to the National Audubon Society, about one out of three to four birds migrating through the U.S. pass through Texas.

Millions of birds travel at night, using the stars and moon to navigate.  Bright city lights, however, can disorient them, causing them to collide with buildings and windows.

The City of Grand Prairie is a partner of Lights Out, Texas!, a campaign that raises awareness and inspires communities to take action to protect migratory birds.

Ways you can help:

  • Turning off non-essential outdoor lights between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m.
  • Directing outdoor lighting downward
  • Using motion sensors or timers for exterior and security lights
