October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to honor survivors and support those facing a diagnosis. In the United States, about 270,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Although most breast cancers are diagnosed in women ages 50 and older, the disease can also affect younger women. Men can also develop breast cancer. While it is less common in men, awareness of the signs and symptoms is important because routine screening is not typically recommended.
Know the signs and symptoms:
Awareness is the first step toward early detection. Knowing the signs and symptoms, talking about breast health and encouraging others to stay informed can make a difference.
