The City of Grand Prairie kicked off Hispanic Heritage Month with an early celebration of Mexican Independence Day Thursday at EpicCentral.
Mayor Pro Tem Kurt Johnson, City Councilmembers John Lopez, Jorja Clemson and David Chappelle joined the Grand Prairie Hispanic Chamber of Commerce at Chicken N Pickle to mark the occasion.
Traditionally celebrated on September 16, Mexican Independence Day marks the start of Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs Sept. 15 through Oct. 15.
Thursday's festivities featured traditional Mexican dances, food, live music and "El Grito de la Independencia." The yearly tradition features a chant of "Viva Mexico!" to celebrate the start of Mexico's war for independence in 1810.
Grand Prairie is proud to continue the Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations with a monthlong series of events.
