The Joint Chiropractic, Michael’s, Ulta Beauty, Burlington, Conn’s Home Plus, Petco, Burkes Outlet, HomeGoods, Ross Dress for Less are now open at Epic West, just west of SH 161 between Warrior and Mayfield.
Living Spaces Furniture, a furniture and home décor store based in California, is now open in 175,000 square feet of the former Restoration Hardware distribution center on SH 161. The rest of the space will be used for the store’s fulfillment center. Living Spaces features the Magnolia Home furniture line among others.
Main Event is under construction in Epic West just south of Warrior, and is scheduled to open in the first quarter of 2020. This destination center will feature bowling, food, an arcade, laser tag, rock climbing, gravity ropes, billiards, mini golf, karaoke and virtual reality games.
Epic Waters Indoor Water Park opened its outdoor wave pool this summer.
PlayGrand Adventures all accessible playground for people of all ages and abilities will open early 2020.
Zero Degrees, Salata Salad Kitchen, Fuzzy’s Taco Shop and Olive Garden are now open at Epic West, just west of SH 161 between Warrior and Mayfield.
In same shopping center, Raising Cane’s, Boiling King Crab, Genghis Grill, Blaze Scratch Pizza and First Watch, a daytime café serving breakfast will open by early 2020.
A Taco Bell will open at Epic East on SH 161 just north of Mayfield. Already open on the east side of SH 161 are Jason’s Deli, El Pollo Loco, Firehouse Subs and Panda Express.
Construction on a Wendy’s will be underway soon and Chick-fil-A is now open east of SH 161 between Pioneer Parkway and Arkansas in front of Walmart. Construction on a Courtyard by Marriott is also underway south of Walmart.
Andy’s Frozen Custard is open on Carrier Parkway south of Interstate 20 near R Taco and Starbucks.
FireHouse Gastro Park is open in the historic Fire Station No. 1 on Main Street. Menu items include Nashville hot chicken, smoke house meats and artisanal burgers.
Zavala’s Barbecue is open on Saturdays for barbecue and Tuesday-Friday, 6-11 a.m. for coffee and breakfast tacos at 421 Main Street.
In addition to all the retail and restaurant development on 161, we also have a number of high-end apartments, townhomes and garden homes being built along I-20 and on the Estes Peninsula of Lake Joe Pool
AirBus Helicoptor and Helisim are building a $40 million North American Training Center by the Grand Prairie Airport to train 1,500 pilots and maintenance personnel a year, which they expect to double within a year.
Auto parts maker Flex-n-Gate is operational now in its 430,000-square-foot facility on I-20 making parts for GM, with $140 million in manufacturing equipment and 600 new employees.
Coca-Cola awarded the Grand Prairie Dasani Water Plant its new SmartWater production line, and is investing $33 million in a 25,000-square-foot expansion.
A new Class A office development is headed to Grand Prairie. Cawley Partners announced in August 2019 that a 150,000-square-foot office building is slated for Mayfield Groves at 161 Toll Road and Forum Drive. The four-story building, which has already begun pre-leasing, touts access to amenities at Mayfield Groves, a mixed-use development that's set to include multifamily dwellings, restaurants and retail.
The city is widening Great Southwest Parkway from four to six lanes from Sara Jane to Mayfield Road (complete 2020)
TxDOT is adding one southbound and one northbound lane on SH 360 from I-20 to Jefferson to tie in with the I-30 and SH 360 intersection improvements, both scheduled to be complete end of 2020
The I-20 frontage roads between SH 161 and Beltline Road are under construction, with completion set for early 2023, opening 318 acres for new development.
I-30 frontage road construction continues from SH 161 to MacArthur with completion in 2021.
The Camp Wisdom Road project from Carrier Pkwy to Beltline (FM 1382) will widen the existing 2-lane asphalt road to a 4-lane concrete road. The widening of Camp Wisdom is a joint project, led by Dallas County with the cities of Grand Prairie and Dallas. The construction bids have been submitted and the county is currently analyzing the bid packages. Construction should begin after the first of the year and will take approximately 18 months to complete.
A Veterans Affairs Clinic is now open on Great Southwest Parkway and Sherman.
On the west side of Lake Ridge Parkway and north of England Parkway, Lake Ridge Commons will develop the 91 acres to offer
- 98 single family homes starting at $400K;
- 100 single family townhomes from $275K-$325K;
- and condos above retail
On the northeast corner of Lake Ridge and England Parkway we will see the first retail development on the peninsula. A 4,000-square-foot QuickStop gas and convenience store will be built, with a 4,000-square-foot retail component for up to three tenants.
Beside the QuickStop will be the Mansions of Grand Prairie luxury apartments. The Mansions include retail and restaurant space on the ground floor.
At England Blvd. and Lake Ridge, the Mira Lagos Townhomes North are being built to open mid 2020. These 125 high-end townhomes will be age restricted at 55 plus, gated, and have front porches facing open spaces. They start at $275,000 and share a pool, amenity building and extensive landscaping.
Just south of there, Mira Lagos Townhomes South are also under construction. These 87 units are high-end, not age restricted and offer front doors and porches facing open space.
Serving the peninsula and southern Grand Prairie, the expanded and remodeled Warmack Library reopened in early 2019. Our libraries have been reborn as relentlessly relevant community connectors that educate everyone. The Warmack expansion doubled its space, adding two large programs rooms, a teen center, study rooms and a new Children’s library. And an outdoor educational butterfly garden has gone in outside the children’s program room, with a grand opening this coming spring.
The new Charley Taylor Recreation center opened in 2019, having been expanded from 9,512 square feet to 20,850 square feet to include two meeting rooms, offices, expanded fitness room, game room, restrooms and a boxing area in partnership with the Grand Prairie Police. This boxing program teaches 50-100 kids, and produced seven Golden Glove competitors and three Champions in 2018!
The Animal Shelter expansion was complete this year going from 10,000 square feet to 18,000 square feet and adding 200 kennels, a surgery center, outdoor kennel, fenced grass play space, get to know interior rooms, and nursery space.
We are replacing Fire Station #4, to reopen early 2020; and we enlarged and renovated Fire Station # 6 in 2019, to increase, update and modernize the space available for the staff, equipment and apparatus.
Under construction now, opening December 2019, is a new city hall that connects our existing city hall to the Development Center. This will allow us to move staff around for greater efficiencies, provide one entrance for the three buildings connected by a climate controlled breezeway, and allow for growth and reduce cramped spaces in which we currently co-exist. Basically, we are closing NW 3rd Street and building the new City Hall in the street!
