Ringing in a New Chapter for the Liberty Bell
Published on May 13, 2025
For nearly 50 years, Grand Prairie's Liberty Bell has been a symbol of unity where the community gathers to celebrate and reflect. After decades of standing strong, the liberty bell is getting ready for a refresh—and moving just a few yards from its original location. The bell will soon be carefully taken down for refurbishment as exciting new development, including an outdoor stage, take shape on the City Hall campus later this year.
As part of an extensive restoration process, the liberty bell's wooden yoke that holds the bell in place, hardware, and bell components will be restored. The beloved bell will be reinstalled at a later date under a brand-new overhead shade structure on the City Hall campus, just south of City Hall, where it will continue to stand as a city landmark for generations to come. The original plaques surrounding the bell will also be back, prominently displayed for all to see.
Did You Know?
- Grand Prairie’s Liberty Bell was dedicated in 1976. That dedication was commemorated with a time capsule, which was opened in 2000. The capsule’s contents are now on display at the Grand Prairie historical museum, 1516 W. Main St.
- Over the years, the bell has served as a centerpiece for city events like the National Day of Prayer, Juneteenth celebrations, and special dedications.
- Once reinstalled, the bell will be stationary with a removable clapper—so it can still ring out during special services and ceremonies.
