How It’s Made GP: Turning Trees Into Free Mulch

Your Christmas tree is getting a serious glow-up for spring. The City of Grand Prairie is kicking off its new How It’s Made GP video series with a behind-the-scenes look at how live Christmas trees are recycled into free mulch for residents at the Grand Prairie Landfill.
From Holiday Trees to Free Mulch
Each year, hundreds of live Christmas trees are collected and taken to the Grand Prairie Landfill, where they are ground and recycled into mulch. The mulch is then made available at no cost to Grand Prairie residents and is perfect for flowerbeds, gardens, and landscaping projects.
How Residents Can Get Free Mulch
Free mulch is available on the residential side of the Grand Prairie Landfill, located next to the service station at the front of the site.
Residents are welcome to bring whatever they need to collect mulch, including:

Shovels
-
Buckets
-
Containers of any size
There is no set limit! Residents may take as much mulch as they want.
To pick up mulch, residents must show proof of residency, such as:

Hours:
Monday – Saturday: 7:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Closed the last Thursday of each month at 3 p.m.
In addition to free mulch, the landfill also accepts all curbside recyclables and brush, including tree limbs (under 10 inches in diameter and 5 feet in length), which are recycled into mulch.
