Garbage

The City of Grand Prairie is entering into a new Agreement with Republic Waste Services that will transition residential trash and recycling services to carts. The transition will take place in two phases. Phase I will begin in April 2026 and will serve approximately 1,400 homes. Phase II will roll out to the remaining households across the city on or before October 2027.

FAQs

Question: Is everyone in the city going to carts?

Answer: Yes, all single-family residents will be moving to carts.

 

Question: When are we changing?

 Answer: There will be two main phases. Phase 1 will start cart service on April 6, 2026 and Phase II will start October 1, 2027.

 

Question: How do we know who is in the first group? 

Answer:

Area 1: 641 homes: Greenway Trails, Heritage Towne

Area 2: 446 homes: Lakeview West HOA, Clear Lake Addition, Lakewood Estates Addition, Clearview Estates, Cedar Ridge Estates, Lakeview West HOA

Area 3 & 4: 326 homes: Property Owners Association of Lakeridge


Question: When will everyone else move to carts?

Answer: Carts will become effective on or before October 1, 2027 for the remaining Residents.

 

Question: Will we still have two (2) pick-up days? If not, what day will I be collected?

Answer: Garbage & Recycling will only be picked up one (1) day per week, on the same day as Recycling and Bulky pick-up. Republic is working on a transition plan which will be provided in January 2026.

 

Question: How many carts will each household get?

Answer: Each household will receive two (2) 95-gallon carts; one (1) for garbage and one (1) for recycling.

 

Question: What if I need more than one (1) garbage cart?  Will it cost extra?

Answer: Yes, you will be able to request additional garbage and or additional recycling carts for additional monthly fees per cart per month.

 

Question: What if the carts are too big and heavy for me to move?

Answer: After ninety (90) days, you will be able to request an exchange for a smaller cart.

 

Question: Are you going to charge me extra for the carts?

Answer: No, your initial carts that are dropped off as part of your monthly fee.

 

Question: Is my garbage cost going to go up because of the carts?

Answer: No, but we do have an annual programmed rate increase.  On 2/1/2026 garbage rate will increase by 5.25% for Residential, Commercial and Industrial.  On October of each year the hauler’s rate will increase by approximately 3.95%.

 

Question: If we have alley pick-up, are you changing that?

Answer: No, alley collection will remain the same.

 

Question: What will I do if I have large items to be picked up, such as furniture or an appliance?

Answer: You will still need to call in and schedule a bulk pickup as you do now.  However, the pick-up will be done on your scheduled garbage service day. Republic will pick up two (2) yards per week. 

 

Question: When will my carts be delivered?

Answer: Information will be sent out as soon as it is available.  Please watch www.gptx.org/garbage for updates.


Cart Service Requirements

  • Make sure the lid on your cart can close and opens facing the street. Nothing should block access to the cart.
  • Place trash carts, recycling carts, and other bulk waste in your designated collection area at least 3 feet away from each other.
  • Also make sure to place bins at least 3 feet away from mailboxes, gas meters, fences, parked cars, overhead obstacles and other items.
  • Allow at least 16 feet of overhead clearance above the carts, and place them as close to the curb or alley as possible. Containers should not be placed under trees or powerlines.
  • Do not block or impede a street or alley right-of-way, water or gas meter, drainage ditch, or sight triangle at an intersection or sidewalk.
