City Adopts Cesar Chavez/Dolores Huerta Holiday

The Grand Prairie City Council voted Tuesday, April 2, 2024, to recognize the Cesar Chavez/Dolores Huerta holiday as an official city holiday beginning March 31, 2025. The City Council acknowledges the outstanding contributions and dedication of these civil rights activists and warmly invites everyone to celebrate the community's vibrant diversity.

Cesar Chavez (1927-1993) co-founded the National Farm Workers Association, which later became the United Farm Workers Union. He led strikes and boycotts that drew national attention to the plight of farmworkers, including a 340-mile march. Chavez was joined in his struggle by Dolores Huerta, who served as a lead negotiator and founded the Agricultural Workers Association.

Huerta, who will turn 93 April 10, remains an activist and continues speaking out for workers' rights and women's rights. Last year, Grand Prairie renamed Downtown Main Street as Dolores Huerta Boulevard in recognition of her accomplishments.

The new Cesar Chavez/Dolores Huerta Grand Prairie holiday will feature commemorative festivities celebrating their enduring legacy each March 31 beginning in 2025.
