Property taxes are calculated by taking the appraised value as determined by the appraisal district minus exemptions multiplied by the city portion (66 cents) of the property tax rate.
- Property tax amount = (appraised value - exemptions) x (tax rate) / 100
- For example, a home may be valued at $200,000 and have an exemption of $35,000.
The city property taxes = ($200,000 - $35,000) X (.66)/100
The property owner will pay $1,089 as the City of Grand Prairie’s portion of property taxes.
The city portion of your property tax is only about 29% of your total property tax. The remainder are:
- GPISD: 47%
- Dallas Hospital District: 9%
- Dallas Community College District: 5%
- Dallas County: 10%
While increases in valuations result in additional property tax owed, Grand Prairie’s property tax rate has not increased in the past 29 years.
The last increase was in 1992; the property tax rate was reduced in 1997, 2000, 2021, and 2022.
