Commercial Electrical Permit

The City of Grand Prairie has adopted the 2020 National Electrical Code as mandated by the State of Texas that regulates the safe installations of electrical systems and equipment. All electrical work requires an approved permit by the Building Inspections Division. All electrical work must comply with code article 6, 2-3-04 of the City of Grand Prairie Ordinance. Step 1.Review Requirements

The following is required prior to issuance of an Electrical work permit:

  • Address and use of property information
  • Owner and Contractor information
  • Type of Installation
  • Category of electrical permit
  • Note: This Permit is for Electrical work conducted by a licensed contractor only. If proposed work is part of a larger project such as new construction, remodel, or addition the electrician should be added as a contract on that parent permit. Solar PV and Generator Systems require a separate Commercial Miscellaneous Permit.
  • Fault Current Calculation(PDF, 159KB) form must be provided as needed when upgrading service panel

Step 2.Apply Online

You can apply online for a permit through the City of Grand Prairie's Customer Self-Service portal . First time users will need a valid email address to set up an account. It takes about 5 minutes to create a new account.

What next?

After completing the online application, permits are processed in approximately 5-10 business days. Depending on updates needed from the applicant, as this can result in longer approval times.
