Monthly Spotlight: Physical Fitness and Sports
The Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans recommends 30 minutes of physical activity a day for adults, 60 minutes for children, at least five days a week. Sound daunting? It's much easier than you think, regardless of your current activity level. There are plenty of ways to get moving and some may even surprise you! It's time to be active, get healthy, and have some fun!
Engaging in physical activity as a family can be a fun way to get everyone moving. Studies show that kids who believe they are competent and have the skills to be physically active are more likely to be active. And those who feel supported by friends and families to become active, or surrounded by others interested in physical activity, are more likely to participate.
Let's Move Outside
Regular exercise in nature is proven to improve adults and children’s physical and mental health. Outdoor activity helps people maintain a healthy weight, boosts their immunity and bone health, and lowers stress. Let’s Move! Outside was created to get kids and families to take advantage of America’s great outdoors – which abound in every city, town, and community. Through public-private partnerships and in conjunction with all levels of government, the Department of Interior leads Let’s Move! Outside to inspire millions of young people to play, learn, serve, and work outdoors.
Children and teens need at least 60 minutes of active and vigorous play each day to stay healthy, and one of the easiest and most enjoyable ways to meet this goal is by playing outside. By linking parents to nearby parks, trails and waters – and providing tips and ideas – Let’s Move! Outside can help families develop a more active lifestyle. USDA's food icon, MyPlate, serves as a quick visual reminder to all consumers to make healthy food choices when you choose your next meal, built off of the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for all Americans. MyPlate can help prioritize food choices by reminding us to make half of our plate fruits and vegetables and shows us the other important food groups for a well-balanced meal: whole grains, lean proteins, and low fat dairy.
