Meet the current dogs being trained at the Dallas County Jail!
All of the dogs:
- Go through a 5-week training session and live with their trainers, handlers and caretakers in a dormitory style work camp
- Have had temperament tests and typically get along well with other dogs and people
- Are immediately available for adoption, but we ask that you wait to take them home until after their graduation
- Crate trained, house trained, and learn basic obedience
- Work on their leash skills in the program, but may need additional help after graduation
- Are up-to-date on vaccinations, spayed/neutered and heartworm negative
If you find a dog that you would like to adopt, please fill out our online adoption application. It only takes a few minutes, and you don't pay anything until you have met the dog and are ready to take him or her home.
Additional paperwork will need to be completed at the shelter.
This little lady’s loving personality is guaranteed to win your heart in an instant. Although just over a year old, she has the soul of an old lady. At the shelter, when not Velcro-ed to the side of a human, she passed her days by spending time with a couple senior shelter pets (10yrs+) that showed her she didn’t have to be afraid. Beatrice’s personality has blossomed and her willingness to please makes her an ideal candidate for your new best friend!
This pint-sized princess is Ella! At 10 months old, this girl has all the great qualities of a Lab in a petite, 35lb body. Although initially very shy, she quickly made dog and people friends at the shelter. Now, with her happy smile and gorgeous chocolate coat, she is quite the charmer. There is no doubt that she is the ultimate addition to any family!
This handsome fellow has a goofy wiggly personality that is guaranteed to put a smile on your face. Although this two year old puppy has exuberance to spare, he has also shown to be very well mannered. Gunther appears to be house-trained and knows how to sit on command. For a treat and a couple pets, he will be happy to charm you into taking him home!
This ray of sunshine has gorgeous golden eyes and a cute freckly nose that will have you at hello. At around two years old, Parsnip’s happy-go-lucky personality will quickly brighten your day. He would be an ideal playmate for another pup (he loves his girlfriends at the shelter!) or running buddy for an active, two-legged friend. Whatever the situation, Parsnip is always ready to go!
Nibbler is a lanky, fun-loving one year old Point mix. His easy-going personality and goofball antics will put a smile on anybody’s face. If it is a best friend you are looking for (whether for your dog or you), Nibbler is the perfect match.
Meet the graduate hounds of the Home for Hounds program! These hounds have completed basic training with the inmates of Dallas County Jail. They have learned commands such as "sit" and "shake", and are also kennel trained. The dogs are healthy and ready to be adopted!
Flower is a nine-month-old American Pit Bull-Terrier mix, who is as sweet as can be! She is ready to bring joy into her new home while getting all the hugs and kisses that she can.
Camilla is a bundle of happiness! She is just a pup at around 9 months old and needs a family who appreciates her spirit of adventure and her bossiness. She has made several canine friends here at the shelter so may appreciate a doggie pal to hang with in her forever family.
