The Water Distribution Division shall reliably provide – in a safe, timely, knowledgeable and courteous manner – an adequate supply of quality water under sufficient pressure in order to meet all customer demands for drinking, personal hygiene and fire protection. To protect the environment and health of the residents, commercial customers and visitors of the City of Grand Prairie, the Wastewater Collection Division shall provide:
- Reliable and sanitary wastewater collection
- Timely response to emergency situations
- Compliance with state and federal laws in courteous, knowledgeable and safe manner
Whether you are a homeowner planting trees or an excavation company digging foundations – everyone must check for underground utility lines before digging. Texas state law requires that you must call 8-1-1 to locate natural gas pipes, electric lines and other underground utilities before digging to prevent damages.
To Locate Water, Sewer and Traffic Fiber Optic Lines

- The city requires three full business days to mark the area you have requested (exceptions: emergency locates).
- When requesting locates, you will be asked to provide your name, number, company name, type of work you are doing and location of the project you are working on. Specify if the project is outlined in white markers and whether you need locates marked in the front of the property, in the street, behind the curb, on the side or in the rear of the property.
- After requesting locates, you will soon see some colored marks or flags at your job-site letting you know where underground lines are so you can safely dig. If any lines are clear of that area, “clear” will be written on the ground.
- You must call back in two weeks time if you are still working on your project to request updated locates before locates expire.
- This service is free. The city does not charge for locating city water, sewer and traffic fiber optic lines.
To locate buried lines that belong to property owner (such as private water and sewer lines or taps). Call a plumber. The 811 service or the City of Grand Prairie cannot mark buried lines that belong to a property owner. A commercial line-locating firm or licensed plumber should be called in advance to mark all private utility lines. Generally speaking, any lines running from a water meter to the house are the homeowners’ responsibility, and any sewer lines from the sidewalk to the house are the homeowners’ responsibility.
To keep the city’s water supply at a safe level and to comply with the city’s whole sale water purchase contracts, the following restrictions apply at all times:
- No watering between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.
- No watering on Wednesday, Saturday or Sunday.
- Even numbered addresses may water on Mondays and Thursdays.
- Odd numbered addresses may water on Tuesday and Fridays.
- When watering, a constant stream of water should not be allowed to flow into the street drainage.
- Watering during precipitation is prohibited. Rain sensors are required on newer watering systems.
- Handheld and soaker hoses are allowed to be used any time.
