Summer Reading Club Kicks Off June 2; Great Monday Programs All Summer

The Libraries will have great programs for kids all summer long

The Grand Prairie Libraries begin their “Libraries Rock!” Summer Reading Club with a Kickoff Party at the Main Library from 10 am to noon on Saturday, June 2. Visit our face painters and balloon artists, check out the music themed booths with rockin’activities and meet Shimmer from Shimmer and Shine, Chase from Paw Patrol, plus Strawberry Shopkins and Branch from the Trolls movie. Don’t miss the performance by Mariachi Espuela de Plata from 11:30 a.m. to noon. 

Each Monday throughout the summer, we’ll offer a free kids program at each branch. Programs are first come, first served, and subject to change. Please arrive on time – space is limited, especially at our Warmack Branch.

  • Shotwell Library: 10:30 a.m.
  • Main Library: 1 p.m. (stay for a free kids’ lunch outside at 2 p.m., courtesy of CitySquare)
  • Warmack Library: 3:30 p.m.


June 4: Ballet Folklorico SRC 2018 kicks off Monday programs with “Danza! Wonders of Mexico,” an exciting and cultural experience from the dancers of Anita N. Martinez Ballet Folklorico. This engaging and educational program will highlight dances and costumes from around Mexico.


June 11: STEP! Join us for this exhilarating Step program. Learn about the history of Step and fraternity life by strolling and stepping with members of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated of Texas A&M University at Commerce.


June 18: Peace, Love & Books: Outta Sight 60’s Music Festival Don’t sweat it. Come to the library and listen to the groovy beats of the sixties and have fun doing 1960s inspired activities. Dress to impress; costumes encouraged!


June 25: Repco Wildlife Encounters Libraries rock and so do the animals of Repco Wildlife Encounters. Come rock out to Animal Songs, a program that will feature the vocal stylings of a wide variety of reptiles and creepy crawlers. This program will teach children about how animals communicate through song.


July 9: Professor Brainius Science Show We will bring down the house as we rock out with Professor Brainius and his wild and wacky science show. The Professor’s show inspires children to think creatively and believe in their full potential.


July 16: Dondoko Taiko Drummers Get ready for the drumming experience of a lifetime.  Feel the beat and learn about Japanese drumming culture.


July 23: Theatre Arlington Be engaged, entertained and inspired by these award-winning actors! This live production will have you on the edge of your seat with excitement.


July 30: Rick the Magician Rick Morrill will dazzle you with his comedy magic show. Don’t let this opportunity vanish!


August 6: Indoor Petting Zoo Get up close and personal with the animals of God’s Little Critters in this walk-through program. Finish the petting zoo by checking out a book on your new favorite animal.


August 13: Zumba with Ernesto

Let’s rock out to Zumba beats with this exhilarating dance program from United Dance Academy that blends upbeat, world rhythms with family fun.
