Storm Drainage Master Plans

City flooding and drainage problems are key issues when planning for the safety, health and quality of life for Grand Prairie citizens. As part of the City-Wide Drainage Master Plan the city has engaged consultants to prepare state of the art drainage studies for flood prone areas of the city and to recommend future Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) projects to alleviate flooding.

City-Wide Internal Storm Drain Master Plan Study (March 2015)

The city had Halff Associates, Inc. study and determine the level of service of its storm drainage systems north of Joe Pool Lake using the StormCAD software program provided by Bentley and recommend future CIP projects.

Cottonwood and Lakeview Watershed Internal Storm Drain Master Plan Study (November 2012)

Five flood prone hot spot areas were studied using the state of the art two dimensional (2D) hydrodynamic modeling program by Innovyze called InfoWorks SD 2D. A detailed fine mesh 2D study was performed by five separate consultants, each assigned to one of the hot spot areas. Overall management and coordinate of the studies was performed by Lockwood, Andrews & Newnam, Inc.. The studies used City detailed storm drainage as-built plans, limited field surveys and were performed in compliance with the City 2010 Drainage Design Manual and the City of Grand Prairie Technical Modeling Standards for Watershed Wide Storm Drain Master Plans Using InfoWorks SD, December 2012. The storm drains of the remaining area of the Cottonwood Creek and Lakeview watershed were analyzed by Halff Associates, Inc. using the StormCAD modeling program by Bentley.

Fish Creek Watershed Internal Storm Drain Master Plan Study (July 18, 2013)

Master Plan Study Update, Drainage Problem Area Assessment and Neighborhood Flooding (March 2016)

The City awarded a contract on March 22, 2016 to McKim and Creed, Inc. to evaluate and update the past City Wide Drainage Plan studies and Capital Improvement Program (CIP) project recommendations adding new development and City/State projects to the planning modeling and providing new 2016 City Wide contour information and Global Position Survey (GPS) monument survey updates. The contract included evaluation and recommendation of drainage projects for two flood prone areas and to address certain house flooding drainage complaints during the May 2015 rainfall storms. The study also included developing city-wide potential overland flow accumulation maps and providing rainfall on mesh flood studies for the Indian Hills Area and Shady Grove Area using the state of the art two dimensional (2D) hydrodynamic modeling program by Innovyze called InfoWorks SD 2D. The study also included update of the region StormCAD models for storm drainage systems by incorporating the StormCAD models developed during the development drainage review process since the City Wide Internal Storm Drain Master Plan was completed in March 2015. Overall management and coordination of the update and studies were performed by McKim and Creed, Inc.

  • City-Wide Potential Overland Flow Accumulation Maps
    A City Wide potential stormwater runoff accumulation study was performed by McKim & Creed, Inc. in May 2017 using rain on mesh 2D hydrodynamic modeling with the program by Innovyze called ICM. City storm drains and field surveys were not including in the modeling so this flood definition is to be used, together with other detailed studies of the storm drainage systems and creek and river floodplains, as a planning tool only to determine areas of potential flooding for various frequency storms.

  • 2017 Indian Hills Feasibility Study
    Lockwood, Andrews & Newnam, Inc. performed a rainfall on mesh two dimensional flood study in 2017 for the Indian Hills Area bounded by Dickey Road on the south, Cherokee Trace and Indian Hills Branch on the north, South Carrier Parkway to the west and SE 4th Street to the east. The study included studying existing drainage patterns in the study area and develop a plan to address existing flooding and pavement ponding issues. A study report was issued in June 2017 giving the study results and recommendations.

  • 2017 Shady Grove Area Study
    McKim and Creed, Inc. performed a rainfall on mesh two dimensional flood study in 2017 for the Shady Grove Area bounded by Trinity Boulevard on the south, Rock Island Road on the north, Roy Orr Boulevard to the west and Belt Line Road to the east. The study included studying current existing and future developed conditions to establish drainage patterns in the study area and analysis the proposed capital improvement plan from the existing 2003 Knowlton-English-Flowers (KEF) master drainage plan for adequacy and develop a plan to address flooding issues. A study report was issued dated January 2018 giving the study results and recommendations.

  • 2016 StormCAD Update
    Halff Associates, Inc. updated the city-wide region drainage StormCAD models resulting from development storm drainage systems that had been completed since March 2015. Approximately 30 new locations were incorporated into the drainage modeling and submitted to the City in August 2016.
