Foster Program

Thank you for your interest in the Fostering Program. Grand Prairie Animal Services Adoption Center accepts stray and owned animals regardless of age, health, species or breed; therefore we take in around 7,500 animals per year. As a result, we are always in need of individuals or families who can commit their time, energy and love to assist us in saving as many lives as possible. By offering your home to an animal in need, not only do you help prepare a pet for a forever home, but you also directly assist in creating a better future for our community's animals and the families that love them.

What is a Foster Home?

Foster homes provide affectionate temporary basic care for a pet until they can find a loving forever home. Foster homes increase our organization's capacity for care and save countless lives. Foster homes come in all shapes and sizes; when applying to become a foster with our organization, we work to match you with the best foster pet for your home environment.

What types of animals need fostering?

  • Under-aged kittens and puppies
  • Gestating or nursing mothers with litter
  • Cats/dogs going through recovery after injury or illness
  • "Socially-Awkward" cats or dogs needing behavior rehabilitation
  • Displaced animals needing temporary homes

Responsibilities of a Foster

  • Work independently and follow instructions and policies
  • Be able to transport foster animals to/from vet appointments and adoption events
  • Provide care and socialization to foster
  • Monitor the medical condition, energy level and behavior of the animal(s) in your care
  • Ask questions or call when any possible concerns arise

The amount of time a foster animal will remain in your care depends on the type of foster and can be worked around your preferences.
