
The Summer Reading Challenge starts June 2. All Grand Prairie Libraries offer a summer reading program for any age - child, teen, or adult. Read throughout the summer for your chance to win coupon and gift card prizes.

Children's summer programs.
The Grand Prairie Genealogical Society meets the first Thursday of each month in the Library’s Meeting Room. At 6:30 there is a meet and greet with the meeting starting at 7 p.m. The Society exists to support family history research and the Genealogical Collection of the Grand Prairie Memorial Library. The next meeting is June 5. July's meeting has been moved to July 10.
No idea where to start your family research? Hit that brick wall? Helpers from the Genealogical Society will visit the Main Library to help answers questions and give pointers. They will be available from 6:30 to 8:30 in the Local History Room, on the third Thursday of each month.
Upcoming sessions include May 15 and June 19.

Take an Afternoon Film Break: Join us at 1 pm on the first Tuesday of each month to watch a feature film. Bring a snack or sack lunch!

The Grand Prairie Libraries have added many online databases and resources lately. Here are 2 of special interest to the business community:
Thousands of legal forms are available, with more forms being added daily. Legalforms includes Official, State Specific, Federal, Business, Personal, Real Estate and General forms covering hundreds of legal subjects and issues.
Small Business Resource Center The Small Business Resource Center is a galaxy of vital business information, from the entire Business Plans Handbook Series, to the Encyclopedia of Business Information Sources and Encyclopedia of Management and Small Business Management. The Small Business Resource Center also features nearly 200 business journals, reference works like Portable MBA Strategy and Portable MBA in Entrepreneurship, and many titles in Wiley's "For Dummies" series, such as Entrepreneurship For Dummies, Business Contracts For Dummies, and Home-Based Business For Dummies.

Thursday, June 12 at 7 pm Where's the Money? The Lowdown on Grants
Presented by Jill Azaria of Dallas Public Library's Grant Information Service.
Jill will talk about the Grants Information collection and services. She'll also review the four basic sources of funding (private foundations, corporations, government and associations/neighborhood groups). She'll discuss the resources applicants will need to use to find funding from these sources and how to use them. This program is aimed at non-profit organizations.
Thursday, July 31 at 7 pm Get the Facts: Dispelling the Myths of Home Buying
Learn what's fact and what's myth when it comes to points, down payments, and loans. Learn how to overcome the barriers that stand between you and homeownership, and see the advantages of owning a home. Plus hear about other people's success stories! No registration is required for this program.
This workshop will be presented by Frazier Revitalization.

Free GED Classes at the Library: The Dallas ISD sponsors free GED classes at the Grand Prairie Main Library. All students should bring pencils, black pens, and notebook paper. Registration for new students is on Thursdays. New students should come for an entire session in order to be pre-tested.

Teen Programs

The Summer Reading Challenge begins June 2 and continues until July 27. Earn a shot at a weekly or Grand Prize by picking up a reading log at the Circulation Desk, and having it stamped as you finish books. When you turn in your log after 8 hours of reading or listening to audiobooks, your log become your entry form.

Our next Teen Game Time will be Tuesday, May 20, from 4 to 5:30 pm. Kids 11 to 18 can drop by to play with some of the Library's gaming equipment. We'll choose between our Playstation 3, xBox 360, Dance Dance Revolution, and new Wii!
Other game dates will be Tuesday, June 17, and Tuesday, July 22.

Author Clare B. Dunkle will visit the library at 2 pm on June 14.
Come for pizza, and talk with Clare about the writing life and her fantasy books, like The Hollow Kingdom and By These Ten Bones.
Afterwards, we'll watch a fantasy live-action movie starring Jennifer Connelly and David Bowie as the Goblin King.
Get Crafty! On Monday, June 16 at 4 pm, we'll make a folding mini-album. We'll have paper, instructions, and other supplies, but bring any photos or flat mementos you'd like to use (like stickers).
Get Crafty! Wednesday, July 2 at 4 pm. Keep your secrets in this box camouflaged as a book. We'll provide everything you need.

Children's Programs
Storytime for toddlers and preschoolers is at 11 am on Tuesday and Wednesday. There will be no storytimes during the month of May, while we prepare for the Summer Reading Challenge.
Baby storytime is each Tuesday at noon. This storytime is for babies 0 to 17 months and their parent. There is no baby storytime in May.

Pajama Storytime is a special evening storytime for kids and their parents. Wear your pjs, bring your blankie, and join us for stories and crafts. Our next pajama Storytimes will be at 7 pm on Thursday, June 26, and Thursday, July 24.

Summer Movies begin Friday, June 6. We will show a feature film each Friday during the summer at 12 noon. A schedule will be available at the Library soon!
Ringling Bros. Clowns
visit the Library as part of their "Reading with Ringling Bros" summer program for kids. When kids join the library's Summer Reading Challenge, they can earn a FREE Ringling Bros. circus ticket as they read.

Kids' author Shirley Smith Duke A former teacher of science, English and ESL, Shirley now writes for children of all ages. No Bows! is her first picture book, a story for toddlers about a little girl with her own ideas about what she wants.
Thursday, July 10 at 2 pm
Wildlife on the Move brings their animal friends to the public.
This summer's show highlights "the unhuggables": the creepy, the crawly, and the ugly.
Monday, July 14 at 11 am
Sandy Shrout and Friends return to the Library with her new fable, How the Dragon Got His Fire.
