A longtime Grand Prairie resident is sharing the joy of fishing with youngsters at the City of Grand Prairie's Kids Fishing Day in a big way this weekend. Mr. Jim Gililland donated more than 65 handmade fishing rods for kids to use during the event 1-4 p.m. Saturday, March 1, at Mike Lewis Park, 2410 Carrier Parkway in Grand Prairie. After retiring from the Air Force over 47 years ago, Mr. Gililland began fishing as a hobby and making fishing rods, as well.
Children 16 years and younger are invited to participate in the free event. The lagoon will be stocked with rainbow trout from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.
Prizes will be awarded in three age categories for the Largest Fish, Smallest Fish and Most Fish Caught.
No pre-pregistration is required to participate, but there will be an on-site signup table beginning at noon. A limited number of loaner rods and reels will be available on a first come first serve basis with a driver's license or credit card deposit.
