Each year Councilwoman Ruthe Jackson and members of the Grand Prairie Historical Organization ring the city's Liberty Bell to commemorate the founding of the original settlement, Dechman. This year, members rang the bell on Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2013, to celebrate 150 years since the founding of Dechman.
Alexander MacRae Dechman originally founded the town site of Dechman and received a deed for the land now known as Grand Prairie on January 2, 1863.
The town name was officially changed from Dechman to Grand Prairie, Texas, in 1877 by the post office.
