UPDATE: Adoption Fees Waived on Empty the Shelter Day, Aug. 16
Posted Date: 8/11/2014

UPDATE - Aug. 18: During Empty the Shelter Day, 57 dogs and 24 cats were adopted from Prairie Paws. Only 2 adoptable dogs and 15 adoptable cats were left in the shelter.

What is it?
Puppies, kittens, cuddly adult pets are waiting! Empty the Shelter partners invite the public to find their perfect pet match during Empty the Shelter Day, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 16. On this day, Metroplex shelters will waive pet adoption fees in the largest adoption effort ever held in North Texas. The shelter partners have high hopes that this will be the largest multi-city, multi-county adoption event in the United States. Participants include more than 30 North Texas-area shelters, and they represent 81% of the Metroplex.

Approximately 5,000 adorable pets will be available for adoption at 33 North Texas-area shelters during this seven-hour period.

A complete listing of participating shelters, locations, hours, adoption policies and other important information regarding Empty the Shelter Day is available at

This event is sponsored by NBC 5 and Telemundo 39, and is made possible through a generous grant from the ASPCA.

Why are we doing this?
Summer is a tough time. Puppies and kittens born during springtime are ready for adoption. Also during summer months, owners move or go on vacation and many surrender their pets to shelters for adoption. To address the overcrowding problem and to help these beautiful animals, municipal and nonprofit shelters joined to waive adoption fees on this one special day.

Together with the North Texas community, these groups are hoping to find forever homes for all of the animals in their shelters.

When is it?
Saturday, Aug. 16 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
