Be Aware of Callers Posing as Utility Employees
Posted Date: 5/9/2014

The city of Grand Prairie warns residents to be suspicious of individuals posing as utility employees on the phone. Spanish speaking and English speaking residents have been targeted.

All cases involve a man calling a customer to request payment for an overdue utility bill. The customer is told to get a loadable credit card from a local retailer for the specified amount and to then call a certain phone number to make the payment. Customers were also told they had a very short time frame to do this or the water would be disconnected. Individuals falsely claiming to be city employees are committing fraud.

If customers receive a call of this type that claims to be from Grand Prairie Water Utilities, please call 972-237-8200 to report the incident.

The only phone number to call for making payments to the Grand Prairie Water Department is 972-237-4545. The secure system is automated and payment information is not provided to a live individual.

If the caller claims to be from another utility, do not give credit card information over the phone, and please call your service provider to verify the requested information.
