What is the Union Pacific track renewal project?
Union Pacific's track renewal project will replace existing rail and install concrete ties on rail that runs parallel to Division Street. The project moves eastward from Fort Worth to Dallas. According to Union Pacific, the railroad industry has been making a switch from wooden ties to concrete ones since the 1980s because concrete is more durable.

What's the timeframe of this project?
The project is scheduled to begin in Fort Worth in early January 2013. Construction on the Grand Prairie portion of the railroad is expected to begin Jan. 21. Each railroad crossing is expected to be closed for 3-6 days.

How will this project be completed?
During the track replacement process, approximately 6-8 miles of track will be closed at one time. A Union Pacific Track Renewal Train will pick up existing rail, ties and materials and lay down new track, concrete ties and improve rail crossings.

Will this project affect traffic in Grand Prairie?
Railroad crossings will have to be closed for the construction. The first set of rail crossings closures will be:

Great Southwest Parkway crossing is now open
NW 19th crossing is now open
NW 23rd crossing is now open

SW 2nd St. crossing open
