|Shady Grove Community Garden and Orchard at a Glance|
The Shady Grove Community Garden and Orchard, located at the Shady Grove Church, 2404 N Carrier Parkway, was constructed in the summer of 2010 with a UPS Community Improvement Grant offered in partnership with Keep America Beautiful. The garden has 40 beds that are 4 feet wide by 12 feet long and 18 inches deep. The beds were built by volunteers with cinder blocks and as part of an Eagle Scout project. The gardeners are experimenting with three different soil mixes, of which the 70% leaf compost, 20% expanded shale and 10% sand mix has proven to be the most effective.
We practice organic gardening methods and have monthly support meetings for the garden. Beds can be adopted for free for six months at a time. All supplies are provided by Keep Grand Prairie Beautiful. Participating gardeners commit to spend a minimum of one hour a week caring for their bed. A percentage of the food grown is donated to the church's People That Care ministry to feed the hungry.
