Cooking oil and grease can clog drains when poured down the kitchen sink.Keep Grease from the Drain! This causes sanitary sewer backups and overflows that are a health hazard and a threat to the environment. When the pipe is blocked, raw sewage comes up through cleanouts or city manholes, contaminating the soil and waterways.

Used grease and cooking oil should be poured into a non-leaking container and taken to a household hazardous waste (HHW) collection event for recycling. HHW events are scheduled regularly. REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. For dates and to register, call 972-237-8055 or visit www.gptx.org/wq/hhw.

We will accept household and automotive batteries, pharmaceuticals, motor oil, cooking oil, paint, aerosol cans, fluorescent bulbs, and household, landscape, and pool chemicals. We will not accept explosives, gas cylinders, fireworks, medical waste, radioactive materials, or municipal trash. No commercial waste is accepted.

How can you help?

  • Don’t put grease down drains.
  • After cooking, collect grease with a paper towel or news-paper and dispose of it in the
    garbage.
  • Collect grease in a container and save it in the refrigerator until you throw it in the
    garbage.
  • Wipe grease from your plates and cookware with napkins or paper towels prior to
    washing.
  • Don’t dump food scraps high in fat down the disposal. Put the scraps in the compost or garbage.
  • Whenever meat is drained in a colander, place the colander over newspaper instead of
the sink, then throw the news-paper away.
  • Never dump motor oil or other lubricants down the drain. Take used oil to the nearest
collection point, such as an auto distributor.
  • When deep frying, collect the used cooking oil in a container, and dispose of it in the
    garbage.
