Scholarship Information

The Grand Prairie Sister Cities Chapter is dedicated to promoting cultural exchange both at home and abroad. The mission of Grand Prairie Sister Cities is to cultivate successful relationships and international understanding among the youth, adults, businesses and organizations of Grand Prairie and its sister cities through educational, leadership and exchange programs.

The Grand Prairie Sister Cities Scholarship is a $2,000 award given to one Grand Prairie Resident High School Senior who meets the following criteria:

  • Cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher
  • Demonstrated interest in a field that promotes cultural exchange (International Business, Foreign Relations, etc.) through an essay and degree sought from an accredited university

Students should download, print, and fill out the scholarship application included at the bottom of this page along with the following:

  • 1-2 page essay (12 point font, double-spaced, Times New Roman) on the importance of cultural exchange and how your degree will prepare you to promote cultural exchange
  • 3 letters of recommendation that highlight the applicant’s leadership potential (at least 2 must be professional references from a teacher, school official, club sponsor, employer, etc.)

Applications will be reviewed by the Scholarship Committee, comprised of two Sister Cities active Board members and one non-Board member. Relatives of current Sister Cities Board members, City Council Members, or City of Grand Prairie employees are not eligible for consideration.

Applications will be judged based on three criteria:

Academic Merit: determined by a combination of course work and cumulative grade point average

Leadership Potential: determined through listed achievements, community involvement, letters of recommendation, and personal essay

Interest in Cultural Exchange: determined through community involvement, letters of recommendation, and personal essay

The deadline for applications is March 31st. Only complete applications will be considered. Applicants can expect to be notified no later than April 31st. Completed application packets should be mailed to:

Disbursement of funds will be handled through the educational institution the scholarship recipient plans to attend. When the tuition bill becomes available, the scholarship recipient should email a copy of the invoice to afortune@gptx.org. Sister Cities will disburse the scholarship award directly to the educational institution. The awarded funds must be paid toward the tuition of the student’s first semester of college before August 31st, 2016.
