In keeping with our western heritage and continually facing the challenge of providing professional headwear options for our police officers in the hot Texas summers, Grand Prairie officers are now dawning cowboy hats as part of our standard uniform.

The idea to issue cowboy hats came about thanks to a committee that Chief Steve Dye implemented years ago called the Shared Leadership Team. The team is made up of representatives from all ranks of the department. At one of the Shared Leadership quarterly meetings, where the representatives have the opportunity to express any ideas; thoughts; and concerns from their people within the department, the idea of wearing cowboy hats came up. Considering Chief Dye’s West Texas Roots and love of the western culture, he jumped on the idea immediately.

The safety of our officers is paramount. Thus, there was no question about issuing these waterproof cowboy hats to protect our men and women from the sometimes brutal Texas sun and keep them warm during the winter months.

The American Style 7104 with the fancy vent and a 4” inch brim is a part of the department’s budget this year. We feel this choice is the most professional look and the best choice for our agency based on the fact we are in Texas, Grand Prairie has a western heritage, and we host our annual Cowboy Cops Rodeo event at Will Rogers Coliseum in Fort Worth (benefitting Special Olympics). We anticipate the majority of our officers will be outfitted in the hats just in time for our annual event on September 9th and 10th. You will see many police officer contestants, and their family members, competing in traditional rodeo events. The rodeo will be emceed by the legendary rodeo announcer Bob Tallman.

Currently, 30 to 40 out 270 officers have their cowboy hats. While wearing the cowboy hat is not mandatory, demand is so high that The Best Hat Store in Fort Worth ran out and is ordering more for our department.
