Grand Prairie Solid Waste Division Receives Keep Texas Beautiful Award
Grand Prairie, Texas– Keep Texas Beautiful recently announced City of Grand Prairie Solid Waste and Recycling Division as a winner of the 2017 Government Award – City – 150,000+ Population, one of the awards it bestows to honor those who protect the Texas environment and support the organization’s mission to make Texas the cleanest, most beautiful state in the nation. The Government Award – City – 150,000+ Population recognizes outstanding contributions to the Texas environment made by government departments, divisions or agencies.
Each year, Keep Texas Beautiful acknowledges deserving individuals, businesses, community groups, civic organizations, media, government entities and law enforcement officials for their commitment to an array of environmental issues, including litter prevention and community beautification, volunteerism, illegal dumping enforcement and education.
This year, the dedicated staff at the Grand Prairie Landfill was recognized for providing a learning destination to the students of the Grand Prairie Independent School District. More than just a play to bury waste, the landfill provides educational opportunities to students at the constructed wetland, the gas-to-energy facility, at the working face and in the on-site classroom. Beginning in August 2015, a partnership with GPISD and Discovery Education led to the first official Landfill STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Camp. More information about the Landfill, Recycling, Public Art and Streetscaping, and Keep Grand Prairie Beautiful can be found at www.GPTX.org
Award winners were/will be recognized at Keep Texas Beautiful’s 50th Annual Conference, held June 12-14th in San Antonio. A full list of winners and award descriptions, as well as information about the conference can be found at www.ktb.org.
